Morris-Cafiero’s research investigates lookism (discrimination based on physical appearance) and how the discriminatory event and its impact be visualised. Morris-Cafiero uses performative and experimental practices and social media to create photographs and emerging technologies.
Morris-Cafiero’s photographic series “Wait Watchers” was the subject of viral media attention which engaged over 250 million people with the project. Morris-Cafiero received thousands of bullying messages criticising her body and overall appearance. She used these messages to create her next series of photographs, “The Bully Pulpit,” where she found public profiles for 25 of the bullies and costumed herself to look like them and inserted their hateful comment into the photograph.
Morris-Cafiero’s work has been nominated for the Prix Pictet in 2014, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize (longlist) in 2021 and was finalist for the 2020 BMW Residency. The Magenta Foundation published her monograph, The Watchers, in 2015 and Fall Line Press published her second monograph, The Bully Pulpit, in 2019. Morris-Cafiero is represented by TJ Boulting Gallery in London.
